my one-eight-one family

181 refers to 181st Street in Washington Heights, New York, NY.  That’s where I spent a lot of my time and was inducted into a very tight family of friends. I miss you all very much.

These were taken on my last night with them when KB made me repeat after him: “I will never work for free again.” And that was it. The end of my internship and free labor days.

From left to right: Monte: photographer & professional knows-how-to-have-fun guy. He took SUCH great care of me and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. There’s too much to say. Josh: badass and sweetest photographer and skateboarder. He is called the stormin’ mormon and this late night meeting was arranged for two reasons 1.) so that I could have the experience that is Crif Dogs and 2.) so that Alanda could get Josh’s autograph on a t-shirt for her 10-year-old nephew who loves to skate. We only found out about Josh’s other identity (the stormin’ mormon) earlier that day and were really tickled about it because people actually freak when they see him. Alanda: Monte’s studio manager, wonderful actress (she’s on One Life to Live which gives me the giggles) and my soul-food sister…we totally get each other and get overly excited about asian cuisine. OVERLY excited. Random info: she’s half black, half thai, parents are both white, dad is gay and has two monkeys…true story. KB: digital tech extraordinaire, knows more about the photo business than anyone I’ve ever met, advice-giver, and loves to inspire. He’s a big teddy bear.  Aaron: other intern who was working with Monte the same time I was. Didn’t have the chance to get to know him as much as I did the others but does great photo work. One very important lady is missing from this picture and I can’t remember where she was that night.

On our walk back to our respective subways, Monte and Alanda got into a fight. Long story short:

Monte won.

test: new york knicks shoot

photos by Monte Isom

He totally walked into the frame the second I took this shot. Obviously. What I tried to say is that I didn’t plan on him being in it.

I like it nonetheless.

camera and a girl

I think I’ve found a new series to make.

good news

I’ve found another (professional) photographer to teach me.

Worked on a shoot today in Tarrytown, NY for Madison Square Garden’s HD network where the photographer shot portraits of various New York Rangers Ice Hockey players in super intense lighting, moods and poses. The photos will be used as advertising for the network on billboards, in magazines and on the sides of double-decker buses. I was the “stylist” on the shoot today (in addition to newbie photo assistant) and had the job of spraying down/giving the players sweat beads.

Test shots by Monte Isom:

An iPhone camera shot by Shannon Roddy who was digital tech on the job. This is me getting paid to spray water in people’s faces (among other things):

And a photo from my phone:

the real world: long beach

Not really. But doesn’t this shot look like we’d be the cast of some sort of TV show?

Shannon and I went to a Feal Good Foundation event on Long Beach yesterday, and post-ceremony, I had fun shooting her on the beach along with two nice fellas we met…then we had sushi with another nice fella that we met on the way back to the car. It was a fun day of making new friends and taking photos for the sake of taking photos.

Everything that I shot after the festival is on Shannon’s CF cards and I won’t get those until Wednesday-ish. I’m really itching to go through them though. Will post more later in the week.

i like creative people. i also like non-creative people.

Everyone has probably heard of Etsy.com by now (your place to buy and sell all things handmade) but what you might not know is that they host Monday Craft Night everyweek at the Etsy Labs in Brooklyn. Such a great idea. Every Monday there is a theme and anyone of all ages and both gender can show up to participate and supplies are, well, supplied. I was a first-timer today and the theme was “Recipe Slam and Community Cookbook Craft Night” hosted by Sweet Tooth of the Tiger. They sold goodies for a dollar each…and I actually got two cupcakes for a dollar because mine were tiny. About five seconds after I paid for them though, I dropped one on the floor. Boo hiss. But the one that I did get to savor was super delish.

So everyone who participated was asked to bring or email their favorite recipe before they came so that they could be photocopied/printed out and cut into pages so that we each could put together and bind our own recipe books. I’m kind of a veteran at bookmaking so that craft was pretty easy but I was a bit of a wuss when it came to poking holes through the pages with the thick needle because the last time I made a book it was in a car on the way from Lynchburg to Roanoke for a friend who was moving to Hawaii and I poked the needle through too hard that it went through my finger. And I had to pull it out. And I felt every part of it coming back out. And it wasn’t just a normal thin sewing needle, it was one of those thicker crafting ones. I got so nauseated Jeff had to pull over and give me some time to calm down. I don’t do too well with injuries.

So I submitted the recipe that I got from a co-worker when I worked at The Roanoke Times for Pumpkin Cheesecake. Yummy in my tummy. I’m actually going to be making two of these on Wednesday. Who says it has to be November or Thanksgiving to eat anything pumpkin?

Here’s the recipe if you’re interested:

PUMPKIN CHEESECAKE

INGREDIENTS:

8 oz brick of CREAM CHEESE (softened)

1/4 cup of SUGAR

1 EGG

2/3 cup of PUREED CANNED PUMPKIN

3/4 tsp. CINNAMON

1/4 tsp. GROUND CLOVE

GRAHAM CRACKER CRUST (or Pillsbury Roll-Out Crust if you prefer)

Optional: 1 tsp VANILLA, 1/4 tsp ALLSPICE and a dash of NUTMEG.

(I always throw in the “optional” but it’s optional if you feel the cream cheese overpowers the pumpkin—depends on your taste)

DIRECTIONS:

Pre-heat oven to 325 degrees

Beat cream cheese, egg and sugar in mixing bowl

Blend all dry ingredients in seperate bowl then add cream cheese mixture.

Add pumpkin and beat until all is well blended.

Take small tastes and add more pumpkin, spices, whatever, as pleased.

Pour in crust and bake for 40 MINUTES or until knife/toothpick comes out clean.

I’m copying this from the recipe I emailed to them and noticed that I typed “back” instead of “bake.” Whoops.

Oh, and we stenciled our own tote bags too.

If you’re looking for a gift for a lady friend anytime soon, do visit my good friend, Nguyen’s shop: KnitKnit.etsy.com. She’s a very lovely crafter, awesome knitter and her necklaces are selling like hot-cakes. She was also my date for tonight’s craft night. Who I made wait like an hour because after I got out of the subway I walked 45 minutes in the wrong direction and refused to ask for help because I kept getting into shadier places the further I went. At least now I know where I don’t want to explore.

Hooray!

movie with a view

I saw a movie last night at Empire Fulton Ferry State Park which is nestled between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridge in Brooklyn Heights. The screen was actually right under the Brooklyn Bridge and in front of one of the waterfall installations that’s currently on exhibit. It was one of the loveliest ways I could think to spend an evening.

The movie that was showing was Pleasantville (though this shot was a preview of something else). Before the movie there were a few short clips from sponsors…one of them from The Onion News…love their “stories.” I haven’t quite figured out how to post videos on the blog yet but I can take a mean screen shot if I do say so myself. Here is a link to it. Watch it. It’s pretty funny. The title is “Historic ‘Blockbuster’ Store Offers Glimps of How Movies Were Rented In The Past.”

Heh…I just noticed the text in the ticker at the bottom of the screen shot. Oh, Onion News, how ridiculous you are.

I have one more silly visual to share:

Who needs photobooth with its many distoritions when you can just take a photo of your reflection off a trailer that is somehow art-related?

I went to the MOMA on Wednesday after an outdoor lunch with my cousin and his lunch buddy who happens to look like a young version of Mr. Incredible. He was just as jolly and had the most amazing laugh. It made me happy. Anh-Tuan (cousin) works pretty much right across the street from the museum and can get free passes as one of the benefits of working there. So he was kind enough to get me in for free.

I’m working with another non-profit as a writer…and it’s actually way more intense then I thought it would be. I never really figured I’d end up writing as much as I am or will be but there have been a lot of advocacy type things going on in my life, one other specific one who’s story is not mine to tell yet but it feels really great to be doing work that’s helping others. I’m kind of thrown off track by this new development in writing professionally but we’ll see where it goes!

Read a lovely quote from my friend Kimmy’s facebook page today:

“Whatever time may take you in your life, remember this was beautiful.”

Michel Gondry

Michel Gondry (director of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Science of Sleep, and numerous music videos, etc.) spoke at the Apple store in Soho tonight and showed clips from his new movie, Be Kind, Rewind. Before he spoke, they showed a film about the making of music videos he made for Beck, Bjork, Foo Fighters and The White Stripes so that was pretty neat as well. It was crowded and hot as Haiti (that’s what the girl standing next to me described the temperature as) but it was eventful, nonetheless. He seems like an incredibly imaginative person…and I mean, I knew this after I watched his movies but hearing him speak kind of made it more true. He is neat.

No photos or cameras were allowed, but you can’t leave the Apple store without messing with Photobooth…

And again, on a rollercoaster:

Tomorrow is the 7th annual No Pants! Subway Ride. Meghan and I intend to keep our pants on, however, we do feel like we should document this so that’s probably what I’ll be doing tomorrow. It says to not bring cameras since there will be people taking photos of the “event”…but if we’re not participating I’m sure it’d be okay. Maybe. We’ll see. Meanwhile, here are photos and text from No Pants 2k7.

edit 01.13.08: We never made it to NoPants 2k8 because Meghan emailed and asked if we could take photos and their answer was no since they had specific photographers delegated to document it. Can’t say I’m too disappointed.
