Ivy Leaguer ‘infiltrates’ Falwell’s university

An interesting article about a Brown University student transferring to Liberty University (my alma mater) with the intention of writing a book about his experience at Liberty. If you know anything about Brown and Liberty, Brown is an extremely liberal college while Liberty is super conservative. The book titled The Unlikely Disciple: A Sinner’s Semester at America’s Holiest University has been published and is available in stores. I find myself drawn to it because I too transfered to Liberty after attending a liberal college for two years and I can relate to the transition of living the life of a typical college student to living the life of a typical Liberty student. Trust me, they are not the same. The transition was really very strange, almost humorous to me, and I had no idea what I was in for. In the end I’m really glad that I made the decision to transfer though.

Check out the short video clip that gives you the idea behind the book here. And read the article about the author from the Associated Press here.

smith mountain lake [state park]

Jeffrey and I spent this past weekend outdoors which was refreshing. I like this photo he took as it reminds me of how small I really am.

On Saturday, we went to Smith Mountain Lake which I’ve never been to before and we roamed among the trees, lounged on the fake beach and stuck our feet in the water. The water was freezing. But oh so inviting.

Temperatures were in the low 80′s which was lovely but surprising since we had snow the weekend before. We picnicked and frisbee-ed on Sunday.  It was good while it lasted.

glamour

For the ladies: One year subscription (12 issues) of Glamour magazine for $1.50. Offer expires March 15th. http://tinyurl.com/c6vejg

Of all the girly magazines, I’ve always been a fan of ELLE because they have intelligent investigative reporting pieces but have never really given Glamour a glance. (Alliteration!) I assume it’s more focused on beauty but being that $1.50 for 12 is cheaper than a single issue, I suppose this is an easy way for me to find out if I like it or not. Just thought the deal was too good not to mention.

On my second trip to Vietnam, my mom and I brought four full-sized suitcases, two of which were filled with our own clothing and toiletries for travel and two that contained all of our old throwaway and out-of-style clothes. Our “goodwill” piles if you will. When we got to the village where my mom’s family lived and opened up these suitcases and told them that everything in it was for them, I had never seen happier faces in my life and was so overwhelmed and humbled by how grateful and thankful they were that I started to cry. My extended family who lives in huts made out of woven leaves, dirt for floors and wooden beds with no mattresses have their kids running around with no shoes, sometimes the toddlers don’t even have pants and never mind having toys to play with. Though seeing this might make one feel sorry for their living conditions (and I do), somehow I envied their carefreeness and the fact that they didn’t have to worry about fashion, feeling like they needed to keep up with trends, needing toys to play with, or comparing themselves to anyone else.

I think that this TOMS Shoes movement/program is a really neat idea to help those who are less fortunate. A pair of shoes might not seem like much, but to someone who can’t afford them, they treat it like a treasure.

Old Jews Telling Jokes

About Old Jews Telling Jokes by Sam Hoffman: “My father gathered twenty of his friends to share their favorite jokes. We set three rules for the production: the joke-tellers were to be Jewish, at least sixty years of age and they were to tell their favorite joke – the one that always kills.”

New (old) joke every Tuesday and Thursday.
